Over 750 pounds of cucumbers last evening

It is wonderful to walk through a berry patch. The ones I sampled were really good. This is a good raspberry year and they are at there peak right now. We need more pickers as there are thousands of berries ripe of all three colors. You can buy what you pick or you can pick for shares (2 for me 1 for you) The patch is open all day tomorrow during normal stand hours (10 am- 6 pm) Because there are so many raspberries at the moment you do not need an appointment. Daniel

Yesterday’s picking of cucumbers and pickles gave over 750 pounds and two long bean rows here in my garden gave over 200 lbs of beans. Basil, beets, cabbage squash, lettuce- the gardens are giving us lots of good gifts. It is time now to be making pesto, pickles and sauerkraut. Canning tomatoes and sweet corn are still a bit in the future.

It rained!! We needed that rain so bad. If it does not rain we can irrigate for a while but the ponds were getting low enough that I was a bit worried. They slowly refill but we would have had all the ponds here empty in about 10 days. I have never before been that close to out of available water. Thank God for rain and sunshine.

It takes a wonderful lot of water to equal an inch of rain. Here are some figures. It takes a little over 27,000 gallons to put one inch on an acre. So, on 15 acres of garden the rain yesterday was over 400,000 gallons. At 100 gallons per minute that is 40 hrs of running both big sprinklers. When it is so dry it takes from 5-to 8 hours per day to do the irrigation. So in a sense a good rain frees up about 40 man hours of labor to do other chores. Can you even comprehend how much water is in a big storm system? God’s world is awesome. Daniel
